Meet Your Teacher! Follow the clues to reveal a few things about me before we begin!

About me I am from Charlotte, NC

My Family Emily (5) and Ethan (2)

With Nanny Olga 

Education Graduated from Myers Park in 2001 Earned my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at UNC – Chapel Hill

Career Began teaching Biology at Waddell High School in 2005 (3 years) Taught for 1 year at West Charlotte HS Spent 6 years at Garinger High School Came back to MP in 2015 (4th year)!

Basic Facts I love cats! My favorite treat is anything chocolate (or cheese!!!). My favorite color is purple. I played varsity volleyball when I was a student here at MP. I still live in the house I was born/grew up in.

Interesting Facts I used to have a pet squirrel named Pockets …and a pet Chinchilla named Dusty …and 3 baby possums (Winkin, Blinkin and Nod) I played band here at MP…trumpet! (That’s how I met my husband) When I was 5 years old I broke both of my arms …at the same time …it made coloring difficult 

I want to know YOU! Fold a piece of card stock length-wise PRINT your first and last name in the center of your name tent

Add to your card! NAME Write 1 word that describes you Draw an emoji (face picture) to show how you feel about this class NAME What do you think you want to study in college OR what career are you interested in? List a favorite hobby or activity you enjoy

Originally “doctor” then “nurse” but ultimately TEACHER! Add to your card! Curious Mrs. Mathis Originally “doctor” then “nurse” but ultimately TEACHER! I love to read! As we go around the room, introduce yourself and tell us the name you prefer to be called. And share ONE (1) of your 4 corners.

AP Biology Warning This course is HARD. You will struggle but you will succeed if you are willing to work hard. You must STUDY. No way around it. You must be present.

AP Biology Exams  will mimic the AP exam Labs Will be paper based No phones Calculator permitted (but no phone calculators) All tests will contain MC questions and free response questions No re-tests, but there will be opportunities to earn lost points back Labs 25% of this course is spent doing lab investigations These labs will be reflected on the AP exam in May You need a LAB NOTEBOOK: preferably one with graph lined paper This is good documentation for college lab credit

AP Biology Strategies & Activities You need this book: The Survival of the Sickest by Dr. Sharon Moalem This course will have a LOT of reading (both in and out of class) Class will consist of lecture, hands-on lab work, virtual labs, group work, collaboration, partner discussion, class discussion, online videos, quizzes, homework assignments, POGILS, and more!

AP Scores & AP Credit Most colleges require a 4 or 5 (some accept a 3) on the AP exam to earn college credit for the course Scores of 3 and up indicate the student is ready for college level work. Students who take an AP course (even if they don’t score a 3, 4, or 5) are still better prepared for college than those who don’t experience the AP program

How did last year’s students do? Average Score was 3.2

The AP Exam

AP Resources https://www.collegeboard.org Check out College Board and AP Central for testing information, dates, fees, scores, practice tests, etc.
