Parts of a Newspaper

Name Plate or Flag The banner at the top of the newspaper that identifies the name of the newspaper

Index Front of the newspaper Shows where everything is located Lists all the parts of the newspaper California Weather The Funnies Saves time

Headline The words printed in large type across the top of a newspaper article to catch the reader’s attention.

Dateline The words at the beginning of a news article that tells when and where the article was written.

Byline The line that told you who wrote the article.

Lead article Usually the main article- the most important piece of news.

News Article In a newspaper, a story about an event that has just taken place.

Feature Article In a newspaper, a detailed report on a person, an issue, or an event.

Editor One of the people who runs a newspaper.

Editorial Column An article that expresses the stand/opinion of the editors and publishers on a current issue.

Business News Reports on the status of different businesses and industries. Also can be used to find price of stocks.

Sports Section Articles and scores on national, international, state, and local sports matches.

Letters to the editor A section of the newspaper where readers write letters expressing their opinions about current events.
