How will Spain benefit from exploring the New World? Do Now How will Spain benefit from exploring the New World? Give at least 3 ways!! $$$$ Natural resources Gold/sugar/spices/metals… Why the desperation for salt/spices? Worldwide respect ↑ population base….↑ land Spread of Catholicism Negative part of getting all this stuff? Others will want it!!!!!!!!!!

European Competition Portugal is the main early rival to Spain Prince Henry the Navigator Why are Spain and Portugal the early leaders in the race for the New World? GEOGRAPHICALLY COOL!!!! Think Italy and Renaissance!! Contact with Moors who were more advanced than Europe Explorers would claim land for their countries in New World, but big problems arise. ????? How do you enforce the territory you claim, when no one is their to defend it, or lives there, you just say its yours! Other people/civilizations already exist on the land Competing claims leads to war

Treaty of Tordesillas-1494 Portugal and Spain agree to have the Pope settle their disputed claims in the New World… Why would they let the Pope decide??? Shows importance/respect for religious leaders Both countries are Catholic, so he will be fair, right?

Conquistadores How is it possible that all of these conquistadores can conquer millions of people from established empires? Disease Technology Religion Rivalries among the natives Displacement Intermarrying

Conquistadores-Worth the Glory? Juan Ponce de Leon Searching for Fountain of Youth Discovers Florida Poison arrow Hernando Cortez Conquered Aztecs/Mexico for Spain Died of infections/ heavily in debt/ little recognition by king Juan Pissarro Conquered Incas/South America for Spain Assassinated in his home by a rival

Explorers- Worth the Glory? Bartolomeau Dias Cape of Good Hope/ bottom of Africa Shipwrecked, drowned Vasco de Gama 1st to India Died of malaria after being forced to go back there Henry Hudson NYC/Canada for Dutch Looking for NW Passage Mutiny by crew, left him and son adrift on a boat to die in Hudson Bay Giovanni Verrazano N. America for France While exploring Bahamas, captured and eaten by Carib tribe Ferdinand Magellan Rounded the world…… sort of Bamboo spear in Philippines, then clubbed to death and probably eaten Juan Sebestian Elcano????? John Cabot (Givovanni Caboto) North America for England/ second European to N. America Lost at sea. Most likely thrown overboard by his crew!!!
