SS4 Review

Fredonian Rebellion Haden Edwards receives a land grant from the Mexican Government When he goes to settle his land people already live there Mexico sides with the people who already live there Due to this contract dispute over land claims, Mexico takes away Edwards’ land grant Edwards rallies people to revolt against the Mexican government and start a new republic

Turtle Bayou Resolutions A Mexican militia leader in Anahuac arrested William B Travis due to public disturbances The people in Anahuac were frustrated and fought back to free Travis They then sat down and wrote the TBR In the TBR the settlers explained what happened at Anahuac and pledged their loyalty to the Mexican government

Law of April 6th Passed as a result of the Mier Y Teran report because he said the Anglos way outnumbered the Mexicans in Texas at the time One of the first steps towards the Mexican government angering the anglo colonists Outlawed US immigration into Mexico (Texas) Outlawed slavery Added a tax to all imported goods

Arrest of SFA SFA was sent down to Mexico to discuss colonist requests with Santa Anna SFA had to wait about 6 months to see him SFA got angry about this and sent a letter to San Antonio telling the Texans to form their own country, independent of Mexico The letter was intercepted and SFA was arrested and jailed for 1.5 years This was the last straw before the revolution

Alamo Santa Anna laid siege to the Alamo for 13 days William Travis tried to get help to come but not enough people responded and came to help him (see bullet point below) Travis wrote his famous Victory or Death letter asking for help, but it did not work Santa Anna asked Travis to surrender but he and his men fought to the death Santa Anna and the Mexican army won the battle and all of the men inside of the Alamo were killed

Battle of San Jacinto Sam Houston organized a surprise attack against Santa Anna Sam Houston’s troops (Texas) won in 18 minutes The Mexicans were massacred because Houston ordered Vince’s Bridge to be blown up so there was no escape route for Mexico Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign the Treaties of Velasco Texas was made an independent country

Important People in Texas Lorenzo de Zavala – Tejano who spoke out against Santa Anna and served as the first Vice President of the Republic of Texas George C Childress – wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos, it was signed March 2, 1836 Sam Houston – first president of the Republic MB Lamar – Father of Texas education Anson Jones – presided over Texas annexation into the USA James Polk – President of USA who wanted to annex Texas James Henderson – first governor of Texas

Population Growth in Texas Tejanos came into Texas from Mexico and settled in South Texas European immigrants came to Texas and settled in Central Texas Americans from the South came to Texas with their slaves and settled in East Texas Why did no one settle in West Texas?

Annexation of Texas Texas got declined by the USA twice before being accepted in 1845 Americans did not want to go to war with Mexico and the fact that slavery was allowed in Texas were the two big reasons that Texas did not join the USA immediately Polk and the Texans were for annexation Ultimately the US desire for Manifest Destiny helped lead to Texas’ annexation into the USA Texas joined the USA in 1845 as the 28th state

Mexican American War and Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo MA war lasted from 1846-1848 It occurred because the USA wanted land that belonged to Mexico to fulfill ‘Manifest Destiny’ Another reason was Texas’ annexation into the USA Treaty of GH was the treaty that ended the Mexican American War America won the war Mexico recognized Texas as part of the USA and acknowledged that the Rio Grande was the official border Mexico sold the Mexican Cession to the USA for $15 million Mexico Cession is all land between Texas and the Pacific Ocean
