What is Science???

Science begins with curiosity and often ends with discovery! Science is a system of knowledge and the methods used to find that knowledge. Science is driven by the curiosity of scientists. Sometimes experiments are simple and quick but there are also times when experiments are difficult to perform.

Science and Technology Technology is the use of knowledge to solve practical problems. The goal of science is to expand knowledge. The goal of technology is to apply scientific knowledge.

Science and Technology are Interdependent Advances in science lead to advances in technology and vice versa. Think about the invention of the telephone!

Branches of Science Natural Science is generally divided into 3 branches: Physical Science (Chemistry and Physics) Earth and Space Science (Geology and Astronomy) Life Science (Biology and Botany)

Big Ideas in Physical Science! Space and Time The universe is about 13.7 billion years old The observable universe is about 700 million billion billion meters in diameter

Matter and Change The building block of all matter is the atom All matter has volume and mass. All matter on Earth usually takes the form of a solid, liquid, or gas.

Forces and Motion Forces cause changes in motion. If you push on a stationary object it moves. If you push on a moving object, you change the object’s motion.

Energy Energy exists in many forms. Energy exists in matter itself. Energy can be transferred but it can never be destroyed.

Science and Your Perspective Science is both a process and a body of knowledge. Science is based in discovery. Scientific knowledge can change especially with advances in technology.
