Module 1 – Finding Homes : Refugees Lesson 2 – Launching the Novel : Character Analysis of Ha

Yesterday we looked at images of people fleeing Saigon. Opening Yesterday we looked at images of people fleeing Saigon. On page 195 of Inside Out & Back Again, Ha says, “No one would believe me, but at times I would prefer wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama”. What do you think might have to happen to a little girl to make her say that she would prefer war at home in Saigon (Vietnam) to peace in Alabama (United States)?

Work Time Today we will read the first poem “1975: The Year of the Cat” together. Whenever I read aloud I want you to read silently in you heads, following along with the text. This will help you to improve your own reading skills. While I am reading you should be thinking about the GIST of the poem. GIST – your first sense of what the poem is about. Turn and talk to your partner. What is the gist of the poem? What details struck you as we read this poem? Get your journals. We will practice how to take notes using a two-column note taking chart.

Work Time (cont.) As a class we will orally answer the following text dependent questions: Tet is a special day. When is Tet, and what two events are celebrated on Tet? How does the family celebrate Tet? How does this special day affect the other days? What does the narrator, Ha, do that might bring bad luck?

Closing We will use fist to five to rate how we did with the learning target: I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents from the novel reveal aspects of Ha’s character.
