Social Psychology – the social approach Assumption 1: Social psychologists assume that human behaviour is affected by our relationships with other people Assumption 2: Social psychologists assume that human behaviour is affected by our identification with, and memberships of groups and society Assumption 2: Social psychologists assume that human behaviour is affected cultural influences and experiences, that behaviour is shaped through socialisation within a culture, and the internalisation of certain of cultural norms and expectations which guide behaviour and perception. This is known as ‘Social Influence’

Social Psychology: Social Influence Lesson objectives To recap 'conformity' (majority influence) To be able to explain why people conform including informational social influence and normative social influence

CONFORMITY Interview your partner to find out 5 ways they have conformed in the last couple of days and WHY Ask them at least 1 question that gives QUANTITATIVE data and at least 1 that gives QUALITATIVE data

What is conformity? Write your definition on a post-it note Look at other people's. Is yours the same?

CONFORMITY is a form of social influence where people adopt the behaviour, attitudes and values of other members in a majority position

HOW ARE THESE WOMEN CONFORMING? and WHY?

WRITE TWO EXPLANATIONS FOR CONFORMITY

Explanations for conformity: 1.Normative social influence - we conform because we want people to like us. 2.Informational social influence - we conform because we think people know more than we do, i.e. that they are right

Can you identify the 3 different types of conformity ? Compliance Identification Internalisation

What if…. What if no one ever CONFORMED? Do you think conformity behaviour is a consequence of nature or nurture?

Having watched the films showing conformity Do you think conformity is always a good thing? How does conformity link to the idea of ‘schemas’?

From specimen paper (number 2) This is an application question. This means you need to keep linking what you are saying back to the stem. These means quoting from the stem.
