Message From The Teacher… Mrs. Schultz’s Weekly News February 5th- 9th         Message From The Teacher… Just a friendly reminder to check out and sign your child’s planner each night. I appreciate that daily signature as it lets me know you are aware of the assignments and upcoming events. Also, speaking of our planners…you might have noticed that under “ELA”, students have begun to write “read and record” rather than the usual, “read for 20 minutes”. This week, we began to discuss grit, motivation, and setting goals for ourselves. In order to have “Reading Grit”, students must read a minimum of 1 hour per day. (This does include the reading they do in school.) Instead of telling students how long to read, I want them to set a goal for themselves each night, and then record the actual number of minutes they did read. I think we might find some students will be even more motivated to read when they feel “in charge” of this aspect of their learning. Please encourage honesty & praise students efforts throughout this endeavor. Reminders February 14th- Valentine’s Day February 19th- No School President’s Day February 19th- 23rd Mid-Winter Recess February 28th- Dental Presentations (1:25-1:55pm) OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE: Reading- Our PowerPoints were ON POINT! Students have done a wonderful job in such a short amount of time creating these presentations. This week, students also had a chance to watch a weather presentation given by the national weather service. It was a great way to culminate the nonfiction unit. Thank you to all who were able to come! Writing- The publishing process continues for our realistic fiction pieces. We also began our weekly journal entries this Wednesday and Friday. I will be sure to send these home periodically for you to take a glance at. Math- Students learned 3 different strategies for multiplying DD x DD problems: the Open Array, the Expanded Algorithm, and the Standard (Traditional Algorithm). Students are encouraged to use which ever strategy is most accurate and efficient for them. Science- Students have begun to explore open and closed circuits, tinkered with materials such as fahnestock clips, batteries, switches and bulb holders in order to conduct experiments. Shout Outs… Congratulations to our Golden Ticket Winner for 2/2, Lilliya! Contact • Email: nschultz@iroquoiscsd.org
