What is RAISE? Raising Awareness at Induction in common Sources of Error

Our Mission statement Every year patients suffer preventable morbidity and mortality as a result of common sources of error. We endeavour to raise awareness of these common sources of error at induction Our aims are to educate FY1s in order to reduce incidence of these events and therefore improve patient safety.

What is the RAISE programme? 2 hour near peer teaching programme delivered during induction to new foundation doctors Highlights key messages in a clear and concise manner Topics based on national patient safety alerts

What is the RAISE programme? Topics covered Anaemia and transfusion Anticoagulation Insulin prescription Nasogastric tube placement and checking Palliative symptom control Sepsis Falls (new for 2017)

What is the RAISE programme? Each topic has 3 key points Bite sized lecture format delivered by current trainees Consolidated by interactive case scenarios Pre and post session questionnaire Questionnaire looking at knowledge and competence

What makes RAISE different? Regional programme delivered by local near peers 3-4 trainees per site Material is relevant to the trust that the doctors will start in Training day Faculty Mentors Training day – faculty to train, new teachers, increasing teaching experience organised by 2 trainees who have PGCME Faculty mentors – faculty who have been involved in developing material, will help support trainees and review material, check for accuracy and support with any queries, where possible attend session and can complete portfolio assessments

What have we achieved? 2017 RAISE delivered to over 350 new doctors in West Midlands 289 doctors – just over 50% of total doctors
