Acquiring New Lands, America as a World Power

Agenda 1. Bell Ringer: How did we publicize the Spanish American War? 2. Notes: Acquiring New Lands and America as a World Power 3. Panama Canal Clip: The Roosevelts 4. Roosevelt Corollary and Dollar Diplomacy Activity 5. Cause and Effects of Imperialism

Controlling the Caribbean Puerto Rico- “Americans are here to bring you protection, not only to yourselves but your property, and to bestow upon you the immunities and blessings of the liberal institutions of our government” Foraker Act would designate Puerto Rico a territory of the US, and gave president the power to set of a government. Cuba had the Teller Amendment to guarantee America could not take over the island. Our occupational forces were there, and Cuba would become a protectorate under the Platt Amendment to the Cuban constitution.

China and Rebellion Emilio Aguinaldo would lead the Filipino War against the United States’ attempt to exert control over the region. The US attempted to force Filipinos to live in certain areas, and poor living conditions killed thousands. Three years to put down the rebellion, and the Philippines would eventually gain independence by 1946. Open Door Policy- John Hay proposes this to serve all imperial interests in China, but it leads to the Boxer Rebellion. The rebellion is quelled, and imperial forces continue to take advantage of China

The Panama Canal Roosevelt was an imperialist, he settled the terms in the Russo-Japanese War. He would also attempt to finish the Panama Canal, originally started by the French. Yellow Fever had decimated the work crew, so they abandoned the project. When the United States steps in, the Colombians that controlled Panama did not want to give it up. The US sets of a revolt with the Panamanians, and they gain the Canal. It takes 10 years to construct with the help of 43,000 workers. Completed in 1914

Roosevelt and Taft Latin America proved to be where most of our disputes were located. Roosevelt Corollary- The United States would use force to defend interests in Latin America, including any wrongdoing by Latin American countries. Extension of Monroe Doctrine. “Dollar Diplomacy”- William Taft helped pay loans on the 1911 rebellion in Nicaragua. Then, as collateral controlled rail lines and banks in the country. “Purse strings control the country”

Wilson and Mexico Missionary Diplomacy- we have the right to deny recognition to any government seen as oppressive, hostile or undemocratic. Mexican Revolution- Porfirio Diaz ruled Mexico, and was a friend of the US. 1911, Francisco Madero and a group of peasants overthrow the Mexican Leader General Huerta takes over, and Wilson calls it “government of butchers” he wouldn’t last long April 1914, the US intervenes when several American sailors are arrested. We nearly go to war. Carranza takes over, and Wilson recognizes the government. We would aid in taking down opposition to the Carranza government, including Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. Villa would be assassinated in 1923.
