Naming Compounds with Transition Metals

Because transition metals can form more than one ion, we need to distinguish between cations when we are naming them. The charge on the cation is written in brackets as a Roman numeral after the name of the metal.

copper (I) oxide is indicating that we are talking about Cu1+ and thus the formula would be Cu2O. What would iron (III) sulfide be? What would lead (IV) bromide be? What would lead (IV) sulfide be?

Likewise, when we are given the formula and have to come up with the name, we need to include the Roman numeral FeS is iron (II) sulfide. What is FeCl3? What is PbO2?
