Frequency Tables and Line Plots Essential Question: How can information be gathered, recorded, and organized with a frequency table and line plot? Copyright 2012 by Jessica Carr. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be duplicated, or duplicated for any profit-driven enterprise

Vocabulary Data - information, often given in the form of numbers or facts. Frequency - The Frequency is the number of tally marks Frequency Table-a table that displays the number of times each item or category occurs. Line Plot - a number line diagram that uses X marks to show the frequencies (number of times) of items or categories being tallied. Compare the Two Diagrams. What do you notice? Number of Magazines Read When the items being tallied are numbers, a line plot can be used to visually display the data. A line plot uses X marks above a number line to show the frequencies. Copyright 2012 by Jessica Carr. All Rights Reserved. Number of Magazines Read There are 22 x marks in all, so the total number of students is 22. The total number of x marks above 3, is 6, so six students read three magazines. The total number of x marks above the numbers 4, 5 and 6 is six, so six students read four or more magazines. What is the most magazines read? How many students read that many magazines?
