Business case sustainable packaging The project started with the sustainable vision of packaging in 2000: “Moving from a linear to a circular economy is our future and that future starts today!”   Timmo Terpstra – Peeze What is Peeze’s ambition? All packaging by Peeze is circulair in 2025. 2000 Introduction of EVOH barrier 2009 Stopped with aluminium and metallized barrier 2009 Start project of biobased/compostable packaging 2015 Introduction of compostable Peeze coffee capsules 2016 introduction biobased coffee packaging 2018 Introduction compostable coffee packaging (18-1-2018) Next step: Peeze wants to realise this for all their flexibele packaging latest in 2025.

Biological cycle of coffee

BIOBASED vs COMPOSTABLE laminates for coffee

Bringing together know-how Research & development Know-how bio-materials Certifications Vision sustainability Circular economy Concrete project Design art-work Practical realisation: Art-work, cylinders Rotogravure printing Laminating / slitting Logistics Machinability Bringing together know-how

out of cellulose and sugarcane residu. First step: BIOBASED This material is made for more than 85% out of cellulose and sugarcane residu. Both raw materals have less impact on the environment Than regular, conventional raw materials.

Why biobased ? Fossil based raw materials facing depletion. Increasing resistance towards oil-based packaging (both consumers and companies). Governmental targets to drastically reduce the use of fossil-based resources in the coming years Biobased, made out of renewable resources, such as wood and sugarcane residu. Natural resources that can grow back again and be harvested. Price is becoming more interesting: factor 2 – 2,5 compared to conventional Saving more than 4 kg CO2 for each kg polythylene that is being replaced by green BIO PE Easier implementation on existing machinery than compostable Easier production proces of laminates compared to compostable Usage of normal inks and adhesives Normal valve can be used, can however also be biobased valve First step to a biological cycle, unfortunately not yet compostable

Second step: COMPOSTABLE

Biobased vs Composteerbaar Why compostable ? Biobased vs Composteerbaar Biobased Advantage: ·         Maximum biobased certified, 4 star > 80% natural resources ·         Good machinability ·         Normal PE degassing valve can be used ·         Excellent barrièr properties ·         CO2 advantage compared to traditional packaging. Disadvantage:   · Not compostable. ·         Eventually insiniration, does regain energy ·         No financial tax-benefit packaging waste fund. ·         Difficult to communicate.   Compostable: Advantage: ·         Can be thrown in green waste bin, 100% compostable EN 13432. ·         First 3-ply laminate for coffee ·         Excellent barrier properties ·         Good machinability ·         Tax advantage of € 0,62 per kilogram compared to traditional packaging ·         Possibility to supply with compostable valve ·         Easier to communicate ·         Seedling logo an example for KIDV and the vereniging afvalverwerkers. Disadvantage: ·         Less biobased content (2-3 stars: between 40-80% renewable, depending on seallayer thickness). ·         More CO2 compared to Biobased, but less compared to actual packaging.

Sustainability wheel comparison

Differences within Europe Germany: focus on biobased, reduction CO2 footprint France: focus on compostable Netherlands: focus on circulair – can go both ways…….

Time for coffee! Thank you!
