What IS stress? A physical, mental, or emotional tension you feel when dealing with a situation or change. Stress will always be a factor in your life.

What is Stress?

Stress is “the nonspecific reaction of the body to any demand made upon it” –Hans Seyle Internal or external changes, positive or negative, to which a young person must adapt. Anything that causes physical and/or mental wear and tear on the body and mind. Stress is defined as the response of the body to a perceived demand. Stress does not come from the outside, it comes from within.

Eustress or “Positive Stress” Changes or challenges that can contribute to an individual’s growth and development; or improve overall performance and lead to increase in self-confidence & self-esteem. working out solving a difficult problem resolving conflict climbing a mountain or making a personal decision with positive results Eustress – positive stress; can help you achieve your goals

Distress or “Negative Stress” Pressures in school, work, social relationships, family relationships and the environment that are perceived as difficult or even insurmountable due to limited personal resources. Symptoms may include Headaches, neck aches Stomachaches Backaches Muscle tension Distress – negative stress; can have serious physical and emotional effects on your life

Stressors Physical: disease, lack of sleep, etc Family School/Career Environmental Social Etc.

What are some positive ways of dealing with stress?

Effective Coping Skills Planning – budget your time; don’t take on too many responsibilities Positive thinking: self talk Positive lifestyle; self-care skills Laughing! Mindfulness

Distraction or Redirect Energy Getting involved in activities that take one’s mind off the stressful situation (short-term) Going for a walk Exercising Listening to music Spending time with friends Dancing Taking a nap Working on a hobby Reading a book

Relaxation Techniques Stretching exercises Breathing exercises Progressive relaxation Meditation Visualization or guided imagery Journaling Yoga

Time Management Strategies Set goals Get organized Set priorities Get enough rest and exercise Minimize distractions Use an agenda Do the most important things first Etc.

Study Strategies Sit in the front of the classroom Use an agenda book Set up a work area at home with supplies Eat breakfast Get enough exercise and sleep Recopy and / or highlight notes Etc.

What are the benefits of stress reduction/mediation? Research shows that meditation/stress reduction may help such conditions as: Allergies Anxiety Arthritis Asthma Cancer Chronic pain Depression High blood pressure Heart disease
