Patient Advisory Council: “Nothing about us without us” Bedlam Patient Advisory Council: “Nothing about us without us” OUR TEAM: Faculty Sponsor: Kirsten Havig Student Champion: Renee Engleking Bryce Manning, Stephanie Garrett, Emilie Dempsey & Kathy Strunk THE VISION: A forum for diverse patients to be heard and to impact the systems that impact them Truly patient-centered, community-connected care Substantive engagement with the health care system Empowerment and skill development translates to other areas of patients’ lives

Our current reality Patients report their desire to be heard by health care providers…we need more mechanisms to meet this need No current patient representation at the OU Bedlam Clinic (Dr. Whitt, 8/1/12) Other health care organizations employ successful patient advisory councils with positive impacts for patients and communities Underrepresented populations have much to offer = missed opportunities!

The Prototype… The Council will provide feedback about patient-identified issues, based on experience and unique perspective, regarding community health needs, relevant barriers and supports, and solutions, in order to inform and improve service Self- or staff-nominated for membership rotation Training on systems and processes for 9 diverse members Regular meetings with resources for child care, transportation, meals, translation, facilitation Review materials, policies, and programs Elected representative to serve on Bedlam Board Provide recommendations and ideas
