Presentation transcript:

It doesn’t mean what you think it means Many Christians typically refer to the “milk” and “meat” of God’s word exclusively to the depth of their understanding of His word: “He is on the milk of God’s word.” “I wish the preaching was meatier.” The Bible offers a different concept…

Hungering and thirsting after righteousness Matt. 5:6

How the Bible uses “milk” and “meat” Milk: associated with a fleshly life (“infants in Christ”): jealousy, strife, malice, deceit, etc. 1 Cor. 3:1-3; 1 Pet. 2:1-3 Meat: associated with the practicing of righteousness… and through such able to discern good from evil. Heb. 5:12-6:3

The Disconnect Some Christians expect more “knowledge” based preaching. This is fine but does not necessarily fit the mold of what “milk” or “meat” teaching look like in the Scriptures. Biblical teaching, however, focuses on the continual transformation from salvation to sanctification (Rom. 12:1-2)… and discerning good/evil. Cp. 1 Cor. 8

From milk to meat: to go from salvation (milk) to actually living a sanctified life (meat) in Christ.

Working out our salvation “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Lk. 10:25-28 Growing into a mature Christian. 2 Tim 3:16-17 When judgment comes. Matt. 25:31ff
