The Danube The Danube is a river, which starts from the Black Forest, passes through 7 countries and flows into the Black Sea. It also flows through Hungary, where its narrowest part is at the Gellért mountain.
Advantages and Disadvantages The Danube has advantages: travelling, trading, fishing disadvantages: floods In the past, the Danube completely froze because there was no river bank, sometimes this was good, sometimes this was bad.
Mongolian Attack When the Danube froze in 1242, the ice was a disadvantage, because of the Mongolian attack in 1241-1242. The frozen river could not stop the Mongolians, and they could walk through the ice and they destroyed Hungary.
The MARGARET ISLAND The Danube has several islands. The Margaret island in Budapest was made up of 3 small islands in the past, now it is only 1 island. Earlier it was called Rabbit island, but there was a saint princess, Margaret who lived here as a nun. The island was renamed after her.
Matthias Corvinus (Hunyadi) Matthias Corvinus was a famous Hungarian king in the 15th century. They say that he was crowned on the ice of the Danube, but the coronisation was in fact in Rákosmező.
Crossing the River Ship instead of bridge In the past, there were no bridges over river, so people travelled by a special cable ferry (ship), which was called „Repülő ” bridge.
Floating Houses There were a lot of floating houses on the Danube. There was a hole in their middle, which was a pool. People lived here.
Chain Bridge Today there are several bridges over the river in Budapest. For example: Elisabeth bridge, Petőfi bridge, Chain bridge… The first bridge was the Chain bridge, and it was István Széchenyi who wanted to build it. It is a special bridge: made up of chains.
