1. Extension Extension – Latin origin Stretched to village and farmers fields. Extension is an villages and farmers fields. Extension is an out of school system of education Extension originally used in the U.S.A Target group are villages and rural people.

2. Education Production of desirable charges in behavior components knowledge in, skill and Knowledge – Things known Attitude – Things felt Skill – Things done. Human behavior Education Improved human behavior

3. TYPES OF Education experience and exposure to environment. 1.Informal education life long process; learning from experience and exposure to environment. 2. Formal education: offered in schools and colleges; academic programmes 3. Non formal education : Out of school system of education carried to villages and fields addresses the needs of farmers and rural peoples.  

4. Extension a non formal education system Summary of definitions a non formal education system aims at socio-economic development of community Provides linkage between exten. Personnel, research scientists and farmers. Gathers, processes, stores and disseminates information People-oriented, knowledge-based and problem-centered.

5. Extension Education A formal system of education An applied behavioral science Contents derived from research, accumulated file experience and relevant principles from behavioral sciences. Applied for desirable changes in the behavior complex of people.

6. Philosophy of extension service Change through education Individual freedom People’s participation Leadership development Democratic approach Cultural respect Continuous process.

7. Objectives of Extension Fundamental objective: To develop rural people socially, economically and culturally by means of education Principles of extension Principle of : grass root approach, Cooperation and participation, voluntary education, teaching methods, local leaders, trained specialists, satisfaction, whole family approach, democratic approach, cultural difference, learning by dong seeing is believing , local resources need-based programme, aided self-help and evaluation.

8. Fisheries extension Scope : Deals with overall development of fisher folk and fish farmers. Scope : Improving efficiency in production, marketing and distribution Conservation of resources Farm and home management Family living youth development, leadership development and community development Public affairs Alternative livelihood means.
