Minerals Calcium Functions of minerals: Essential for a healthy body Examiner’s Tip Make sure you know and can explain how the minerals calcium and iron are used, and why. Calcium Formation of bones and teeth and vital during growth in childhood. Can reduce osteoporosis which is a condition which causes bones to become thin and weak. Function: Found in: Milk, cheese and cereals 10

Minerals Iron Functions of minerals: Essential for a healthy body Examiner’s Tip Make sure you know and can explain how the minerals calcium and iron are used, and why. Iron Function: Production of red blood cells. Without it the blood would not be able to carry oxygen around the body. Lack of iron can lead to anaemia, tiredness, shortnes of breath. Found in: Meat and green vegetables 11

Function: Drink water like its your job! Water Transports nutrients and waste around the body Controls our temperature when we exercise It accounts for half our body weight Function: Lost in: Breath, sweat, urine and faeces Result: Dehydration Drink water like its your job! 12

Function: Fibre Aid in digestion process Found in: Fruit, vegetables and cereals Result of good levels of fibre: Floaters!!! 13
