Broad Technical Challenge Flat sensor response in intermediate spectral range (at least 0.2 - 40 Hz, up to 0.04 - 100 Hz) Ease of emplacement and ability to function in variety of difficult geologic and environmental conditions Flexibility in application Small size of total instrument package (with sensor support) Low sensor self-noise (below USGS New Low Noise Model) Stable instrument response with calibration Dynamic Range > 120dB Linear Response > 60dB Power Consumption < 100 mW Ideally Three Orthogonal Components Current standard solutions: - Geophone (small, easy, flexible) - Classical Seismometer (flat response, low self noise, stable)
