Research Finding: Library media specialists collaborating with teachers to build quality learning experiences contribute to academic achievement.

The “Bird” Unit Teacher introduces topic. Students do textbook work. Class comes to the library. Students pick a “bird.” Students are given a worksheet of fact questions. Librarian introduces information sources. Students copy facts on to worksheets. Students give reports on their “bird.” Result: Learning = nothing or very little. Result: Students learn to cut and clip information, then regurgitate it.

Why Ban “Bird” Units?

What learning activities in the LMC would be superior to “bird” units?
