The current state of isis

Please have out your notebooks, and begin a new section. Learning Target Students can evaluate the reasons for ISIS’ steady decline from 2014-present day. Please have out your notebooks, and begin a new section.

Isis’ many names Before we start, I would like to go over the different names ISIS is called throughout the media and public arena. ISIS: Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ISIL: Islam State of Iraq and the Levant IS: Islamic State All these terms are referring to the same terrorist group

ISIS AT ITS HEIGHT(2014-2015) 2014 declared an Islamic State, a caliphate, which declared authority over the 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. Had 2 billion dollars of revenue: from oil production, smuggling, taxes, ransoms from kidnappings, and controlling crops. Controlled around 34,000 square miles of territory in Iraq and Syria, roughly the Size of Great Britain. Enforced strict Sharia Law: Men had to grow beards, music, cafes, satellite TV and mobile phones were banned. In the three years following the declaration of the caliphate in 2014, at least 150 attacks in 29 countries across the globe were either carried out or inspired by IS, with well over 2,000 victims killed.

However, ISIS’ control of syria and iraq only lasted a few years

Isis’ Territorial losses

How DID THIS HAPPEN? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCxNiKcoljE To most effectively organize your thinking, I passed out guided notes. Under the section: Fall of Mosul and Raqqa, please answer the questions while watching the video.

How did this happen? Read the article pertaining to the decline of ISIS’ power in the Middle East. While reading, underline the main points: Who was responsible for the loss of power? Were there specific battles, or locations that resulted in major losses for ISIS? How did it happen? Also, I passed out guided notes that will help organize your thinking. Under the category: Fall of Isis, fill out the questions.

ISIS Terror Attacks post 2014 Here is a link detailing all of ISIS’ global terrorist attacks since declaring itself a caliphate in 2014. https://www.cnn.com/2015/12/17/world/mapping- isis-attacks-around-the-world/index.html

What do you notice? Where did most of the attacks happen? What is the difference between an attack inspired by Isis, and an attack conducted by ISIS?

Major Attacks December 2, 2015- San Bernardino, California. 14 shot dead, and 21 injured by Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook at a gathering of local government health workers. June 12, 2016- Orlando, Florida. Gunman kills 49 people at Pulse Nightclub. Omar Mateen, the shooter, pledged allegiance to ISIS while conducting the attacks. November 13, 2015- A series of terror attacks kills 130 people and wounds 350 others in Paris, France. Six locations were targeted around the city, armed with assault rifles and explosives. This was the worst violence in France since WW11 and ISIS’ most sophisticated terror attack to date.

Future/what now In a short paragraph, answer the following question: Even though ISIS’ size and strength has diminished since 2014, do you believe that ISIS still poses a threat to the United States? Provide 2 reasons to back up your answer.
