Getting you Started… Ms. Mullins 2012 What is on the ACT? Getting you Started… Ms. Mullins 2012

First thing’s first… You are not penalized for wrong answers NEVER LEAVE A QUESTION BLANK ON THE ACT!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you pick the same letter and fill in the entire test with that letter, you will get around an 11.

English 75 questions in 45 minutes Questions follow 10 passages No comprehension Only grammar, punctuation, and editing Will not be asked “What is an adverb?” but they will assume that you know… Grammar – verb tense, complete sentences Punctuation – commas, semicolons, apostrophes Editing – adding and deleting sentences

English If you don’t know an answer, need to keep on moving They will underline part of the sentence and give you possible ways to change it If they are testing grammar or punctuation, “No Change” will always be a possible answer Correct ¼ of the time

English Sample The game arrived in Europe during the Renaissance where the most familiar labels of queen, king, bishop, and knight replaced the older names for the pieces, and with those adaptations, the more familiar modern form of the game was born. Even with there unusual background, chess was little more than a game for aristocracy, dilettantes, esoterics, or drawing-room gentlemen 6. A. NO CHANGE B. more familiar C. best familiar D. very much familiar 7. A NO CHANGE B. familiar modern, form C. familiar, modern, form D. familiar, modern form 8. A. NO CHANGE B. it’s C. its J. their

English You need to ask yourself 2 questions for each of the grammar and punctuation questions Is there an error? If yes, which of the answer choices does not fix the error – CROSS THEM OUT If yes, which of the answer choices makes a new error – CROSS THEM OUT Select whichever you are left with

English Example 21. A. NO CHANGE However, in the main hall a bar with a real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials so long forgetting 22 that most of his female guests were too young to know one from another. 21. A. NO CHANGE B. Even though, C. Nevertheless, D. OMIT the underlined portion. 22. F. NO CHANGE G. long forgetting H. so long forgotten J. so long, forgetting

Math 60 questions in 60 minutes Ranging from basic arithmetic to trigonometry Should go through the test and answer questions you know you can get right first and then go back and work on the harder ones Do not waste time on ones you think are very hard

Reading 4 passages with 10 questions each in 35 minutes 8 minutes per passage IF you really attempt each passage Always in the same order: Prose Fiction Social Science Humanities Natural Science Prose Fiction – English text Social Science – usually government or business Humanities – poetry, psychology, popular culture Natural Science – style like National Geographic

Reading Pick the ones you like to do and focus on those first YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANSWER THE PASSAGES IN ORDER ACT tries to trick you Prose Fiction is generally the hardest Natural Science is generally the easiest

Reading 10 Questions about EACH passage Mainly details from the passage A few general A variety of reading strategies we will be using FOCUS: do not read for comprehension and do not try to rush through all 4 passages

Reading Strategies Before you read Preview ALL the passages and pick the one that looks the most interesting Read the blurb/intro so you know what the passage is about Shorter questions are also easier; look for those! Look at the questions so you know what they are going to ask you about

Reading Strategies While Reading… Write two or three word paragraph summaries SKIM – Read first and last sentence of each paragraph If you looked at the questions before you went to read, underline words you recognize from the answers

Reading Strategies After you read… Do the easy detailed questions first Save the general “what is the purpose/message of this passage” for LAST If they give you line numbers, go to those lines but then read above and below 5 lines If they direct you to lines 15-17, read 10-22. By the end, you will have read the whole passage

Science 7 science passages with 40 questions total in 35 minutes Three types of Science passages Charts and Graphs – reading data Experiments – comparing data Comparing Scientists – comparing hypotheses

Science Data in a variety of forms Charts, graphs, tables Narrative – scientific and general FOCUS: pay attention only to what they are asking you and nothing more

Essay 1 question (that is relatable to high schoolers) in 30 minutes Multi-paragraph essay that sticks to YOUR POSITION No right or wrong answer There IS a right or wrong format Essays are read very quickly (3 minutes) so giving them what they want is key (on the ACT only, remember!)

Basic POE You can automatically eliminate answer choices that are: Extreme (always, must, has to) Hypothetical (If….then…) Predict the future (Women’s rights will get better) Too specific for a general question If you have two answers that are direct opposites, more than likely one of them will be the right answer.

A Few Reminders NEVER LEAVE AN ANSWER BLANK ON THE ACT!!!!!!! Take your time on ones you know. Get those easy points. You do NOT need to try every question, but you do need to answer every question. Pick one letter for the entire test for the questions you don’t know.
