LO: Can I write a detailed and sophisticated PEEL paragraph about Curley’s Wife?

How would you describe Curley’s Wife? Can you use any quotations to support your answer?

Authorial Intention Why do you think Steinbeck chose to depict Curley’s wife in this way?

PEEL Example Point Evidence Explanation Link Curly’s wife is portrayed as being both naive and sexual in the novella OMAM. ‘girl’ ‘full’ ‘rouged’ are used in juxtaposition to describe Curly’s Wife. Use of the noun ‘girl’ suggests youth and naivety. However ‘full’ and ‘rouged’ have sexual connotations. Curly’s wife can therefore seen as a woman who, knowing her limitations, uses her sexuality to attract attention. Because of her dress she is continually called a ‘tart’, ‘jail-bait’ and a ‘bitch’ by the male characters. Draw a table like this in your books, which will help you to use the PEEL formula. These are the words that you would analyse at word level.

(Evidence) “…………(One or two word quotation)……………” (Explanation) Write a detailed PEEL paragraph exploring the sexism experienced by Curly’s Wife in OMAM. (Point) What you’re saying about Curly’s Wife. Curly’s Wife is portrayed as being naive,/sexual/dangerous/lonely… (Evidence) “…………(One or two word quotation)……………” (Explanation) Connotations.
