Thematic Maps, Geocoding, Interpolation, …Lab Peter Fox GIS for Science ERTH 4750 (98271) Week 4, Friday, February 17, 2012

Try this… Example: Read the table US_CNTY. Find and select Rensselaer County. File > Save copy as > Save As > [enter table name renss_cnty] > Save > File > Close All > File > Open table > [enter renss_cnty] > Open. This makes a map of the outline of Rensselaer County. Next go to File > Open table > [Open radon.xls] > Create Points > Add layer to map. Map > Create Thematic Map > Grid > Grid default > Next > Table =radon, Field = radon, Table of boundaries to clip against = renss_cnty > Next > Settings > [leave settings as they are] > OK > OK. A color surface map of radon should show up. To change settings go to Layer control, select radon_count > Thematic > Settings > change exponent to 1 > OK > OK > a new map will appear with a different appearance. Cell size is the distance between interpolated points, Search radius determines how far from a point the samples will be used in the weighted averaging, Grid border allows the grid to be stretched out to meet the clip border, and the bottom controls how multiple entries from a single point are handled.

Manual geocoding Read the table NYRENSD.TAB which contains the street names for Rensselaer County. Read the Excel file ADDRESS.XLS. To geocode select Table > Geocode > Geocode table = address, Using column = street, Search table = nyrensd, for objects in column = streetname, Mode = Automatic (other options = none) > OK. A window will pop up stating that 2 were geocoded, 5 were not. Click OK and plot the 2 geocoded points on the map. To manually geocode, go to Table > Geocode > set Mode = interactive > OK. Mapinfo will suggest matches from it’s the street data and you can choose the match (OK) or scroll through the streets to find the match.

While you have got this up.. Change projection Map->Options-> Projections (select category NAD84, UTM Zone X - …) Table->Raster->Modify Image Registration Query SQL Select (e.g. Zip from addresses) X=14

Example k = 2 (see IDW.XLS) Point X Point Y Point Z Distance Weight Z x Weight 1 7.8102 0.0164 10 4 0.0656 15 6.4031 0.0244 0.3659 7 0.1707 sums 0.0816 0.6186 Interpolating at Z is X=5 Y=6 7.58
