Learning Target I can determine how much larger or smaller a digit is compared to the same digit in a different place value. 5.NBT.A.1 Repeat after me. If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

Our Goal 1) Compare the digit 8 in the following number. How much larger is the value of the digit 8 in the thousands place? 8,803.435 2) Compare the digit 7 in the following number. Compare the value of the digit 7 in the tenths place to the 7 in the ones place. 97.76 The digit 7 in the tenths place is _____ of the value of the digit in the ones place. Challenge: Compare the digit i4 in the ones place to the digit 4 in the hundreds place. 8,494.34 If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

Let’s Recap Can the whole change? What happens when you move to the right? What happens when you move to the left?

You Help Me 29. 93 Compare the digit 9 in the tenths place to the digit 9 in the ones place. 838.43 Compare the digit 8 in the hundreds place to the digit 8 in the ones place. If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

You Help Me 1.) 0.3 is 1/10 as great as _______. 2.) 200 is 100 times as great as ______. 3.) 90 is 10 times as great as ________. 4.) 0.005 is 1/100 as great as ________. If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

You Try & I Will Help 0.55 Compare the digit 5 with the greater value to the digit 5 with the least value. 80.08 Compare the digit 8 in the hundredths place to the digit 8 in the hundreds place. 0.5 is 10 times as great as _____. Yellow/Green Partners 1)0.08 is 10 times as great as _____. 2)0.07 is 1/10 of ____. 3) 0.04 is 10 times as great as which decimal? a. 0.4 b. 0.1 c. 0.004 d. 0.001 4) 0.009 is 1/10 of which decimal? a. 0.01 b.0.09 c.0.1 d.0.9 5) When a digit is moved to the right two times, how many times smaller is the digit’s value? If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

Evaluate Me I was asked to determine how many times greater or smaller the digit 7 with the least value is compared to the digit 7 with the greatest value. 707.70 I knew the digit 7 with the least value is in the tenths place, and the digit 7 with the largest value is in the hundreds place. I know that each time the digit moves to the left it increases by a power of 10. I must take three hops to get from the tenths place to the hundreds place, so 10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000. This means that the 7 in the tenths place is 1/1,000 the value of the digit in the hundreds place. The tenths place is smaller than the hundreds place, so I can use a fraction. When you are finished you may pick up your exit ticket & homework. If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

Exit Ticket 1) Compare the digit 8 in the following number.
