How to Coach Disabled People in Sport

Workshop Outcomes By the end of this workshop, you will be: aware of disability in sport and how to include disabled people able to support the adaptation of appropriate coaching activities aware of effective coaching environments

Medical/Social Model Medical model: the person’s impairment stops them from being able to do things within society Social model: society and the environment disable the person

Communication Involves: giving and receiving information talking and listening (and hearing) content and form of information sharing your needs and expectations separating fact from fiction

Key Principles for Effective Communication Discuss personal needs – consider adaptations Respect personal space Talk to participants in a position comfortable for both of you If assisting, identify how best to do this
