10.25.17 CURRENT EVENTS ON THIS DAY: 1869 - John (William) Heisman was born. He is recognized as one of the greatest innovators of the game of football. 1910 - Blanche S. Scott became the first woman to make a public solo airplane flight in the United States. 1929 - In the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged starting the stock-market crash that began the Great Depression. 1962 - During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. naval "quarantine" of Cuba was approved by the Council of the Organization of American States (OAS). 1973 - U.S. President Richard M. Nixon agreed to turn over the subpoenaed tapes concerning the Watergate affair. 1995 - Russian President Boris Yeltsin and U.S. President Bill Clinton agree to a joint peacekeeping effort in the war- torn Bosnia. Teaching with Tournaments Choose your debate partner. As a team, decide on your topic. Don’t tell anyone else. Turn in your topic to me. Begin to research your topic & build arguments. Discuss debate rules.

DEBATE RULES All winning groups will debate three times. First round debates Friday. Second round debates Monday. Final debates NEXT Wednesday. No interruptions from opposing team during debate. Opposing debaters must remain silent & seated. No inaccurate information. All facts must be cited (where did you get the information from; “according to . . .”) Each group member must debate or aid in a debate at least once. Audience must write a 1-2 sentence summary for each debate explaining why they voted for a particular team. Points will be given to each team based on team finish 1-8. Each team will then decide how they want the points divided. 1st place = 16 pts, 2nd place 10 pts. 4th place 6 pts., 8th place 2 pts
