8.4 Using Systems Objective: To solve word problems by using systems of equations

How? Translate the word problem into 2 equations Use key words (sum +, difference -, is =) Either use substitution or addition to solve

The sum of 2 numbers is 115. The difference is 21. Find the numbers. Y= 47 #31

One is 5 times the other. Find the numbers. The sum of 2 numbers is 26.4. One is 5 times the other. Find the numbers. #32

The sum of the length and width of a rectangle is 19 inches The sum of the length and width of a rectangle is 19 inches. The length is one less than twice the width. #33

The perimeter of a rectangle is 48m The perimeter of a rectangle is 48m. The width is 2 more than half the length. #34

Taylor is five years older than his sister. = 5 + s Taylor is five years older than his sister. In four years he will be twice as old as her. How old are they now? = t 2(s ) +4 Let t = Taylor’s age today Let s = sister’s age today

Let m = mother’s age now d = daughter’s age now -1

The perimeter of a rectangle is 130m The perimeter of a rectangle is 130m. One fourth the length is the same as two-fifths the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle. 4( ) 2w + 2 (8/5w) =130 10/5 w + 16/5w =130 26/5 w =130 (5/26) (26/5) w = 130 (5/26)

The perimeter of a rectangle is 56m The perimeter of a rectangle is 56m. One half the length is the same as three times the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle. 2( )
