Welcome to 6th Grade science with Mrs. Ryan!

Each day, take out your pencil box, notebook and folder. supplies Each day, take out your pencil box, notebook and folder. Put your backpack where I tell your group to place them. Soon, we will begin having a Walk-In question to start as soon as you are unpacked.

Hello from Mrs. Ryan! Born in India. Moved to Canada as a baby. Grew up in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Studied a branch of science called physics. Became a high school math and physics teacher, also have taught 2nd grade for 10 years. Fifth year here at Akimel A-al!

My Family Got married in 1987, moved to Phoenix. Married for 31 years to my husband, Arun . We have three kids. All three kids went to Akimel A-al!

My Experiences as a Teacher Taught high school and middle school science for many years. Switched to elementary school. Taught 2nd Grade at Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School for 10 years. Moved to Akimel A-al four years ago and love being back at middle school!

What I Love… Music – playing the violin, guitar, banjo, and piano, and singing in a choir! Reading, sewing and making quilts Learning to do new stuff on the computer Arizona Cardinals and Phoenix Suns Students who are respectful, polite, and who try their best at everything we do!

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS (Classroom rules!) Respect yourself, your teacher and your classmates. Raise your hand to speak. Listen when a speaker is talking. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat. Follow directions the first time they are given. Work and interact in a safe manner.

QUIET SIGNAL When you hear me say, “Your attention, please!”, stop talking and stop what you are doing. Listen for instructions. If you hear the triangle chime, stop talking and stop what you are doing. Listen for instructions. Try it! Talk with the person sitting NEXT TO YOU about what you had for breakfast today or dinner last night. Stop talking when you hear the signal!

TABLE GROUPS Each table has a number in the middle. Stand up halfway when your table number is called! There are 4 positions at each, A, B, C, and D. Stand up halfway when your letter is called! We use these letters to form partners, A with B, and C with D. A B C D 3

Science activity – reaction time Scientists must be observant, notice things quickly, and have a way of keeping track of what they learn while doing an experiment. To get us started on this method, we will do a quick reaction time activity! Partner 1 – Have your fingers open and ready to catch the ruler when your partner drops it. Partner 2 – Drop the ruler randomly, with no warning of when it will be dropped. Repeat 4 more times, then switch partners!

How was your reaction time? Observations from our activity? Can we all compare measurements? Why or why not? Can you remember all of the measurements for your results? How about your partner’s? What would help? Are there variations (changes) that can be done in this experiment? To help scientists work in an organized way, we follow the Scientific Method. Next week, we will try this experiment again but work in a scientific manner!
