A Modular Approach to Building an Arctic Observing System for the IPY and Beyond in the Switchyard Region of the Arctic Ocean P. Schlosser, W.M. Smethie, D. Chayes, M. Steele, C. Lee, J. Gobat, R. Kwok CU/LDEO, UW/APL, and JPL PI meeting, IBM Conference Center, Palisades, NY, March 17 – 18, 2008

Motivation Switchyard region and historical data coverage Freshwater routing and export modes

Components Two Twinotter Hydrography/Tracer sections (upper water layer) between Alert and the North Pole (12 depth levels using CTD/rosette system deployed through 12” drill hole) Helicopter section west of Nares Strait across the shelf slope 7 new lightweight moorings on shelf just west of Nares Strait Satellite-derived observations of sea ice motion and mass budget.

Station and mooring locations
