The Problem with Florida! General Biology Assignment September 2018 References Chapter 1 material

As you will find out, red tides are not unusual, while still traumatic to an ecosystem .However, this summer(2018) has been notably critical, especially as algal blooms from other algae(cyanobacteria) have spiked. Why is this happening? How have humans affected-if at all-the levels of red algae and the green slime described in Florida waterways ? How many basic biological concepts can we see playing out on this stage?

https://oceanconservancy https://oceanconservancy.org/blog/2018/08/28/ Click on this brief article explaining the red tide . https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/red-tide.mp4 brief video explaining the red tide https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/red-tide.mp4 as well as this video https://www.ajc.com/news/national/dead-fish-sea-turtles-manatees- washing-southwest-florida-beaches-red-tide- explosion/7Tw7GR3RqpVxJL5lbka5EL/ podcast

Questions Describe the phenomenon known as red tide and the current example in Florida? 2. What are HAB’s? 3. When we refer to “green slime”, what is occurring? How can this be directly and indirectly linked to pollution. Describe the sources of pollution? Go to the next frame to learn more about how pollution can produce algal blooms.

Address the following using multimedia to display your answers/ideas Address the following using multimedia to display your answers/ideas. This will be done as a group. What levels of organization are affected by this problem? Give examples and justify why they are that level. 1. You are an environmental scientist .You have been assigned the task to go in and begin to propose solutions to this algae problem. Describe observations you are likely to make. 2. You want to prove to the EPA that fertilizers used on sugar cane crops have contributed to this problem. Propose a hypothesis and describe the IV,DV, and Control. Describe how you would carry out this experiment. 3. You want to provide evidence that global warming may contribute to this problem. What behaviors do you want to avoid to carry out this study.

Continued Now—by yourself-go to the website for your teacher—On the appropriate post—comment on this situation in Florida.

Be sure to cite any sources you use in a work cited page-APA format This will count a test grade in total.
