Continuous vs. Discrete A continuous graph is a graph that is made up of connected lines or curves. Other types of graphs are not continuous. They are made up of distinct, unconnected points. These graphs are called discrete graphs.
Continuous vs. Discrete Read the following descriptions and decide whether they would be best represented by discrete or continuous graphs. Sketch a graph of the situation.
Ex 1 Continuous vs. Discrete A bathtub is being filled with water. After 4 minutes, there are 16 gallons of water in the tub. Then someone accidentally pulls the plug while the water is still running, and the tub begins to empty. It loses 4 gallons in 2 minutes, and then someone plugs the drain and fills the tub for a remaining 6 minutes. After a 12-minute bath, the person gets out and pulls the plug. It takes 6 minutes to drain the tub.
Ex 2 Continuous vs. Discrete
Ex 2 continued Which graph best depicts this situation?
Ex 2 Solution The best graph is circled below.
