Perception Chapter 5

What is perception? Perception – an experience caused by stimulation of the senses What affects perception? Sensitivity to stimulus in your environment Physical condition Motivation Mood Attitude

Perceptual Constancies Our memories play an important role in helping us interpret new stimuli and allowing us to perceive certain aspects of our world as unchanging

Shape Constancy Ability to perceive an object as having a constant shape regardless of how it appears to change

Brightness Constancy Perceiving the brightness of an object at a constant level even though its surroundings may change

Color Constancy Perceiving an objects color to be at a constant level even though its surrounding environment may change

Size Constancy

Perceptual Organization Constructionist View – brain constructs perception out of a great many individual sensations Gestalt – brain perceives a stimulus as a whole, rather than individual sensations Developed 4 laws of perception

Law of Proximity

Law of Similarity

Law of Continuity

Law of Closure
