ARIES Pathways Program Industrial Advisory Committee Preliminary Comments R W Kuhr June 14

Technology Assessment Criteria Critical flaws Fundamental process Materials Technology development needs Data needs/cost Confidence in design basis Major risks Implementation Operation

EPRI Criteria Economics Public Acceptance Regulatory Simplicity Need to prioritize Choices determined by primary issues

Critical Flaws Fundamental Process Materials Combination of operating conditions at design point demonstrated at ITER Large number of variants not demonstrated System control mechanisms are critical May not be economic to obtain complete design data Materials Component life central concern New material compositions need long term data which may not be available to support design Lifetime after radiation exposure uncertain

Technology Development Relies on large scale, expensive facilities Limited scope of data in relevant conditions Long list of data needs covered by speculative relationships Difficult learning period from plant to plant experience (long lead times, $$$)

Major Risks Implementation Regulatory Public Acceptance/risk taking Private participation/risk taking Supply chain Completion Cost/schedule growth

Major Risks Operation Capacity Forced outages Scheduled outages Maintenance/repair cost Regulatory changes Early end of life End of life costs
