Macromolecules

Carbon One of the most important elements found in living things Has 4 valence electrons which means it can form 4 bonds with other carbon atoms or other elements such as hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), phosphorous (P)

Carbohydrates AKA- sugars Atoms: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen Monomers: monosaccharide Polymer: polysaccharides. 1)Can be broken apart to provide energy for cells 2)May be chained together to build a plants body 3)Build organelles

Proteins Monomers: amino acid Polymer: polypeptides Atoms: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen Monomers: amino acid Polymer: polypeptides They have many functions including: 1) Connect together to build bodies: muscles, bones, hair, build organelles 2) Build transport tunnels through cell membranes 3) Identify diseases and tag for distruction 4) Some are enzymes that help break chemical bonds 5) Broken apart to provide energy for cells
