ATTITUDES TOWARDS PEOPLE Primacy Effect = the initial impression we form of a person is more influential than any later information obtained ATTITUDES TOWARDS PEOPLE

ATTITUDES TOWARDS PEOPLE STEREOTYPING PREJUDICE DISCRIMINATION ATTITUDES TOWARDS PEOPLE

WHAT STEREOTYPES DOES SOCIETY HOLD OF THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE?

STEREOTYPING STEREOTYPE = A collection of beliefs that we have about the people who belong to a certain group, regardless of individual differences among members of that group These help us to make sense of our world by giving it order We fit people in categories This then provides a system which guides our behaviour when we interact with someone from that group STEREOTYPING

STEREOTYPING We ignore a person’s individuality WHY IS THIS SOMETIMES BAD? We ignore a person’s individuality Often based on incorrect or inadequate information We tend to disregard information about an individual that is not consistent with the stereotype STEREOTYPING

STEREOTYPING STEREOTYPING STIGMA A negative label associated with disapproval or rejection by others who are not labelled that way. Members of that group can feel like outcasts who are devalued, ignored and rejected by others STEREOTYPING
