Jacobean Revenge Tragedy Lesson 10 LO: To explore the dark imagery used in Act 2, Scene 3. .

A Gentle Reminder! https://padlet.com/mrsjgibbs/zqakz69 Jgibbs16.312@lgflmail.org jgibbs@harlingtonschool.org

Class reading Stage directions Bosola Antonio Extra challenge: can you spot the possible mistake? Possible flashback or Webster making a structural error. They hear a woman’s shriek (presumably the Duchess giving birth) but the birth has already been announced in the previous scene.

Task Analyse your quotation in detail. What layers of meanings are there? What alternative interpretations are there? What is significant about the length of line? Explore the punctuation used. Link the quotation back to the context. What critical readings link? How does it link back to Rossetti?

Quote analysis “Enter Bosola with a dark lantern” “I must have part of it,/ My intelligence will freeze else.” “To such a forced expression of fear;/ I am Bosola, your friend.” “[Aside] This mole does undermine me – heard you not/a noise even now?” “You are an impudent snake indeed, sir!/ Are you scarce warm and do you show your sting?” “The great are like the base, nay, they are the same,/ When they seek shameful ways to avoid shame’

Check You have 8-10 minutes to explore your individual quotation in as much detail as possible. Then you will share your ideas with the class. Once each of you have presented your ideas we will have a chance to add anything that might have been missed. Or apply different interpretations.

Homework Hot Potato In a few lessons time we will play a game of hot potato. You will be given a theme/character/idea and will need to say a quotation every time you are thrown the “hot potato”. Make sure you revise key quotations at home. Why not create your own padlets to share with the class.
