PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS Aim: Vocabulary development (describing properties of materials)

Think of as many different materials as you can in two minutes.

Find the words in the text which have the same meaning as the words given. characteristics = be different = usually = form = think = long-lasting = water-resistant = colour, paint = wanted = quite = because =

Find the words in the text which have the same meaning as the words given. characteristics = properties be different = differ usually = commonly form = shape think = consider long-lasting = durable water-resistant = waterproof colour, paint = dye wanted = desired quite = fairly because = as

Write the opposites. pull = suitable = flexible = hard = heavy = attractive =

Write the opposites. pull = push suitable = unsuitable flexible = stiff, inflexible hard = soft heavy = light attractive = unattractive

Complete the sentences from the text using the right preposition. The suitability of a material to a particular job depends __ its properties. Solid materials can differ __ one or more of the following ways: Leather is waterproof and flexible; it can also be dyed __ a range of colours. Rubber is also waterproof and flexible; it is very hard- wearing, and will not slip easily when __ contact with flooring materials. Shoes made with leather uppers and rubber soles can carry __ their job effectively and are durable, which means they last a long time before wearing__.

Complete the sentences from the text using the right preposition. The suitability of a material to a particular job depends on its properties. Solid materials can differ in one or more of the following ways: Leather is waterproof and flexible; it can also be dyed in a range of colours. Rubber is also waterproof and flexible; it is very hard- wearing, and will not slip easily when in contact with flooring materials. Shoes made with leather uppers and rubber soles can carry out their job effectively and are durable, which means they last a long time before wearing out.

Remember: depend on = zavisiti od in this/that way = na ovaj/onaj nacin carry out = do, perform (obaviti) carry out instructions The leaves of plants are designed to carry out photosynthesis. carry out interviews carry out research carry out tests Therefore, in cells that have no mtDNA (termed cells), the electron- transport chain cannot function and the cells cannot carry out oxidative phosphorylation. wear out = pohabati, istrositi (materijal)

Wordbuilding 1. The length of hydrogen bonds depends on bond__________ (strong), temperature, and pressure. 2. The ______ (dense)of water is approximately one gram per cubic centimeter. 3. A bicycle tyre is made from rubber because it needs to be _______ (flex) and tough. 4. Consider which materials would be ____ (suit) to make a pair of shoes. 5. Rubber is unsuitable as it is ________ (attract) and wood is too heavy and __________ (flex). 6. How well a product does the job it was designed for depends on the __________ (effective) and _________ (durable) of the materials that were used to make it.
