What is plagiarism? “The action or practice of taking someone else’s work and passing it off as one’s own; literary theft.” –Oxford English Dictionary

What are some examples of plagiarism? What does “cite” mean? To give credit to the original author Stating where you found the information

What is an in-text citation? Giving the author credit within the content of your essay There are multiple types of in-text citations Direct quotations Paraphrasing Summarizing In order to do an in-text citation, you must always give the author’s last name and page number

What is a direct quotation and how do you cite a direct quote? Direct quotation: Using the author’s EXACT words Ex: Lee reminds readers, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it"(42). OR Atticus teaches Scout, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 42).

What is paraphrasing and how do you cite it? Paraphrasing: Restating the author’s words and ideas sentence by sentence using your own words This is also called an indirect quote Citing: Atticus reminds Scout that you don’t really understand anybody until you stand in his shoes (Lee 42).

What is summarizing and how do you cite it? Summarizing: Condensing down the author’s words and ideas using your own words This is also called an indirect quote Citing: Atticus teaches Scout life lessons by using vivid examples in order to empathize with others (Lee 42).

How does MLA affect the format of your paper? Times new Roman, size 12 1’’ margins Double-spaced Heading with your information Page header Title centered (no underline, italicize, or bold) When mentioning an author for the first time, use the full name.
