X and Y intercepts in story problems October 9, 2014

What does this graph Show?

Miles Per Hour The more hours passed, the more miles you’ve driven. What are the x and y intercepts? There is only one (0,0). What does this intercept mean in the problem? At the start, you haven’t gone anywhere yet.

What does this graph show?

Restaurant Money made from parties at a restaurant. What are the x and y intercepts? There is only one (0,0). What does this intercept mean in the problem? When you haven’t done any parties, you haven’t made any money. Its like the starting point.

What does the graph show?

Movie Tickets The relationship between price and number of movie tickets sold. What are the x and y intercepts? (0, 2450) and ($11.50, 0) What do the intercepts mean in the problem? The y intercept shows the number people who will come if the tickets are free. The x intercept shows the price that will cause no one to come.

What does the Graph Show?

Shopping Amount of money you have after shopping. What are the x and y intercepts? (0, 3500) and (7, 0) What do the intercepts mean in the problem? The y intercept shows the amount of money you have to start with. The x intercept shows the number of shopping trips you would have to go on before you are in debt.

What does the Graph Show?

Temperature Temperature after so many minutes. What are the x and y intercepts? (0, 20) and (15, 0) What do the intercepts mean in the problem? The y intercept shows the starting temperature. The x intercept shows the time when the temperature is at freezing.
