Under-studied Areas of Sierra National Forest, Coyote Lake Senger Creek Red Lake Ershim Lake Dusy Creek Upper Post Corral Creek Under-studied Areas of Sierra National Forest, Fresno County, California Plenty of Citizen Science to Do in Beautiful Wilderness Pitman Creek Upper Helms Creek Burnt Corral Creek Fleming Creek Cow Creek Swamp Creek Lower Post Corral Creek Cliff Lake Lower Helms Creek Fall Creek Exchequer Creek Anderson Creek Meadow Brook Bear Creek Upper and Lower Box Short Hair Creek Blue Canyon Creek Upper Deer Creek Woodchuck Creek Scepter Creek Upper Crown Creek Blue Canyon Granite Gorge Little Rancheria Creek Alpine Creek The map shows parts of the John Muir and Dinkey Lakes Wilderness Area is drained by the North Fork of the Kings River Areas of different colors are small watersheds within the N Fk Kings ranging in area from 10 to 20 square miles Separated from Kings Canyon NP on the east by the LeConte-White Divide To the south is the Kings Canyon, at 8,200 feet, one of the deepest canyons in USA Spanish Mtn to Kings River S Fk/M Fk confluence To the north are the headwaters of the San Joaquin River Contains two large man-made reservoirs and numerous small lakes Almost 300 square miles [288] at elevations from 6,000 to 12,000 feet Area is about 20 miles wide, narrowing to 15 miles wide in the south I’ve spent a lot of energy mapping a disjunct population of Lewisia leeana in this area, expanding the 15 observations made between 1900 and 2008 to almost 600 While chasing L leeana, I have made more than 2940 observations of more than 173 species of plants and fungi I’m going to talk about the Woodchuck Creek Watershed that had no observations in the Calflora database until five years ago Copyright © 2018 Bill Finch. Dead Pine Ridge Crown Valley Lost Canyon Upper Rancheria Creek Lower Rancheria Creek Rodgers Creek Garlic Meadow Creek Gorge of Despair Deer Canyon Tombstone Creek Drainages with/near Observations of Lewisia leeana Sierra National Forest Fresno County, California

Watersheds with few observations Calflora enables overlays of watersheds the “What Grows Here?” feature shows observations in an area watersheds range from about 10 mi2 to 20 mi2 six watersheds in the southern John Muir Wilderness of Sierra NF have three or fewer observations

16.5 mi2 12.7 mi2 11.3 mi2 19.3 mi2 21.0 mi2 12.5 mi2

Botany observations posted from iNaturalist to Calflora in the Woodchuck Creek watershed, an example of a formerly poorly studied area This area showed zero observations in the Calflora database when I started working it five years ago Woodchuck Creek WS = 15.3 mi2 Woodchuck Creek watershed is a four hour hike from the trailhead I have posted 97 species on iNaturalist in this area the nine shown here have been posted from iNaturalist to/by Calflora if you want your data to be in the Calflora Database, you need to post it there yourself

Plants you might expect to find in these understudied areas
