Today’s Goals Create our class blogs Continue our discussion of Civil Disobedience Assess English skills and proficiency

Class Changes Based on your feedback and experiences last semester, we will be implementing a few changes in EGL Additional class time will be devoted to doing in-class writing assignments, reducing the amount of homework outside of class and allowing students to get additional feedback before turning in their assignments Kahoots will be done individually rather than in groups The number of scheduled workshops this semester is decreased

Journal/Blog Entry Instructions For this class, you will be required to maintain an online blog or journal: You may select the social media website of your choosing to maintain this blog, as long as it allows for large text entries and is dedicated to this class Instagram or Wordpress are recommended All journal entries will include a topic to focus on as well as several questions. The questions are there to guide your entry but you are not required to answer all of them as long as you stay on the topic of the entry Unless otherwise noted, always answer blogs in essay form rather than individual answers to questions

Journal/Blog Entry Instructions All journal entries should be 100+ words and appropriately labelled with the entry number. You should consider these to be professional blogs, and they should be edited and maintained as such Blog entries will be done for homework as well as in class. The entries written in class will not be collected. Instead, it is your responsibility to upload these to your blog From time to time you will be asked to read and evaluate entries from your classmates’ blogs, so make sure your entries do not contain information you are uncomfortable with others reading

Blog Entry 1 Focus: Civil Disobedience, laws, & justice Take a few minutes to reflect on our class discussions and readings of Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience.” You may wish to include such information as: What does it mean (to you) for a law to be unjust? Can you think of examples in the US or your home country of a law or issue that is unjust? What is the difference between breaking the law for convenience (or by accident) vs. intentionally breaking an unjust law? Note: Make sure your entry is 100+ words then post it to your blog account. Make sure to enter your blog username on the attendance sheet

Short Write: Reflect on FIU Prompt: Describe and reflect on your favorite aspect of attending FIU or college in the US in general You may wish to include information such as: Why is this aspect your favorite? How does this aspect make you feel? What have you learned from it? How might this aspect affect you in the future? If you are stuck between a couple aspects, you can write about each one. Consider this to be a formal writing assignment, so make sure your writing is well edited and professional Recommended length: 2-3 paragraphs You should turn in one sheet of paper with your name on it
