The SOCIETY vs U.S. GOVERNMENT The novel Matched by Ally Condie is about a girl, Cassia, who lives in a dystopian civilization. She also wants to love who she wants to love, without Societal restrictions. The Society (government) has set regulations that you must follow, and some are very extreme. The Society in Matched differs drastically from our U.S. government. U.S. GOV. SOCIETY The freedom to love who we want to love Boys and girls, of the age of 16, are Matched together by a computer sorting system Must marry and cannot change their Match If you have a criminal record, you cannot be Matched with someone Society picks how many kids you have Men and women can pick who they marry Can marry anyone of any gender, race, religion ect. Can get a divorce and can have has many children as they want SOCIETY U.S. GOV. Cannot travel unless you are of Official status Society can move you, and your family, to a new location at anytime. Even if you do not wish to be moved Of you are not of Official status, your job can allow you to travel to new places The freedom to travel Can travel to *almost* any place in the world Need an updated passport to travel out of the country Can travel by plane, train, ship or car by paying U.S. GOV. SOCIETY The freedom to choose your own profession You can have any job you wish Can go to college to become educated You can keep almost all the money you make Pay for state taxes The Society picks your job based off of your strengths, skills, and intelligence Do not get to change your job once you have acquired it SOCIETY U.S. GOV. The opportunity to come back to life after death Every civilian dies at the age of 80 Throughout your life, samples of your tissue are taken so you can come back to life Once scientists find out how No limit on life span Once you pass, you cannot come back to life Placeholder Placeholder The freedom to pass down family artifacts Can only obtain and keep artifacts if you are of Civilian status and above Cannot have an artifact if you have a criminal record If you commit a crime all artifacts are taken under Society possession Can keep an artifact through generations, despite your “status” and criminal record To find out more about the U.S. Government visit: https://www.usa.gov/ for additional information!
