“The Cattle of the Sun God”

In a Nutshell Because of a terrible storm, O and his men have to take cover in a grotto. O tells his men to eat and drink only what they have on the ship, and he makes a point to tell them not to kill and eat the cattle on the shore.

In a Nutshell As they begin to run out of food, O goes off by himself to pray to the Gods. O falls asleep, and his men give in to hunger and kill the cattle for food.

In a Nutshell Helios (God of the Sun; owner of the cattle) threatens to take the sun to the underworld forever because of the men killing his cattle. As punishment, Zeus sends a lightning bolt and destroys O’s only remaining ship.

After struggling to survive another encounter with Charybdis (whirlpool) with just pieces of his ship, the beautiful nymph Calypso takes O in and cares for him.
