Withdrawing from the Disorderly The Scriptures command us to “withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly.” This lesson explains what it means to withdraw. It also answers questions about who may be withdrawn from and what the motivation for withdrawing should be. 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 & 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15

What is Withdrawing? 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15 It is a command It involves two things: “Note that person” “Do not keep company with him” It’s object is “every brother who walks disorderly” (1 Timothy 5:20-21; James 2:1; Proverbs 24:23) Walks = a pattern of life Disorderly = Not in step with apostolic teaching

What is Withdrawing? 1 Corinthians 5:4-7 It is to be done… “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” “When you are gathered together” To “Deliver such a one to Satan” (1 Timothy 1:19-20) With fair and impartial judgment (1 Thessalonians 5:14)

What if someone withdraws himself? (1 Corinthians 5:4-7) Elders are Shepherds. (1 Peter 5:1-2; Acts 20:28-30) Are shepherds responsible for sheep who have strayed away from the flock? (Hebrews 13:17) Does an army have the responsibility to discipline AWOL soldiers? (2 Thess. 4:6)

What are the proper motives for withdrawing? (2 Corinthians 2:4-9) Love of the brethren. (2:4) Concern for the welfare of souls (2:7-8) Loving unity as a church (1 Corinthians 12:25) A desire to keep the church pure Our willingness to obey God (2:9)
