Mrs Burke (Family Support Worker) Stress in Children Mrs Burke (Family Support Worker)

What is stress? Stress is the function of the demands placed on us and our ability to meet them. These demands often come from outside sources such as family, friends, school commitments exc However, it can also be from within often related to what we think we should be doing versus what we are actually doing. So, stress can affect anyone who feels overwhelmed – even children.

What can cause stress in children? Hearing adult conversations – Does your child hear you talking about troubles at work, a relatives illness or arguments about money? World news – Children may see disturbing images on the news or hear something concerning Kids can have too much of a schedule - No time to relax or play creatively. Illness of a family member A bereavement Separation of parents

Can you think of any other stressors?

Signs and symptoms Mood swings Acting out Changes in sleeping patterns Bedwetting Stomach aches Headaches Have trouble concentrating Appear withdrawn Have nightmares Become clingy

So how do we reduce stress in children?

Coping Strategies Worry Box Make time for your kids each day – quality time is important! Prepare children for a change e.g. moving Offer reassurance Find books or films that understand their feelings for example, bereavement books. Practice relaxation techniques – Moodcafe website, hand exercise follow each finger up and down, when you finger goes up breath in and when down breath out. Distraction techniques – mindfulness exercises for children– balloon game (don’t let the balloon touch the floor!), colouring. Worry Box – Write their worries, parents read through and then talk with child. Proper rest and good nutrition can improve coping skills Quality time with your children is so important. Children want your attention Talk to your child about their stressors and find SOLUTIONS very important Reassurance is very important - Let them know how they feel is normal – Let your child know that it's OK to feel angry, scared, lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings. Reassurance is important, so remind them that you're confident that they can handle the situation.
