Growing in (the) faith

The origin of faith Where does faith come from? From the Holy Spirit who works it in our hearts by the preaching of the gospel and strengthens it by the use of the sacraments. Faith has its origin with the Word. Sacraments serve to strengthen faith. I.e. simply being baptized or partaking of the Lord’s Supper does not not save you!

Sacraments are signs and seals of God’s promises. So what are sacraments?

Sacraments: what are they? SIGN Help you better under-stand what you believe Sacraments Make you more convinced of what you believe What’s the difference between sign and seal? SEAL

Sacraments: what are they?  SIGN Help you better under-stand what you believe Sacraments Sacraments are like pictures, computer icons, symbols, traffic signs. They point to the essence of the Gospel.

Sacraments: what are they?  Sacraments are like passwords, signatures, Personal Identi-fication Numbers (PIN). They point to the reality of the Gospel. Sacraments Make you more convinced of what you believe SEAL

Fill in the blanks on the worksheet Then write it in your own words. SIGN Help you better under-stand what you believe Sacraments Make you more convinced of what you believe What’s the difference between sign and seal? SEAL

Signs and Seals Can you think of three signs in the Bible as a confirmation of God’s promise?

 The word “sacraments” You won’t find the word sacraments in the Bible. So where does it come from? In Latin “sacrament” was originally used for the oath a soldier takes when he entered the armed forces. “Sacrament” came to mean “a solemn pledge or oath.” The sacraments are a solemn pledge or oath, given by God to man. Hence sacraments are signs and seals of the covenant between God and man.

Signs and Seals Can you think of some signs in the Bible as a confirmation of God’s promise? Moses before Pharaoh Gideon’s fleece The sundial of Ahaz

Confession: BC art. 33 4

Sacraments and the Senses Preaching Baptism Lord’s Supper Hearing Sight Smell Taste Touch Animation is in sequence

Confession: BC art. 33 1. Of our insensitivity and weakness 4 1. Of our insensitivity and weakness 2. To represent better to our external senses (eyes, ears, touch, taste + smell) 3. a. What He declares in His Word (preaching) b. What He does inwardly in our hearts (believing)

Thank God for sacraments! Matters of faith can be difficult. Sometimes you’re not so sure about things. Does God really forgive my sins? How? Am I really becoming a new person? God knows how weak we are. That’s why He gave us sacraments. To strengthen us in our faith.

 Sacraments: How many? The Roman Catholic church has 7 1 baptism 2 confirmation 3 eucharist (= mass) 4 penance 5 anointing the sick (=last rites) 6 holy orders (=ordination) 7 marriage

 Sacraments: How many? Holy Holy Baptism Supper The Lord has given us two sacraments: Holy Baptism and the Holy Supper.
