Jordi Escriu – Facilitator Thematic Cluster #3 Need for an Official Registry for Geodetic Codes and Parameters in Europe INSPIRE Thematic Cluster on Elevation, Orthoimagery, Reference systems and Geographical grids Jordi Escriu – Facilitator Thematic Cluster #3 jordi.escriu@icgc.cat

INSPIRE Needs Interoperability IR (Annex II, section 1.5 in the consolidated version): Coordinate reference system (CRS) parameters and identifiers shall be managed in one or several common registers for CRS. Only identifiers contained in a common register shall be used for referring to the CRS listed in the IR (Annex II, sec. 1). TG for CRS Requirement 1 (pg.15): Stipulates the use of http URIs provided by the Open Geospatial Consortium as coordinate reference system identifiers. These are based on and redirect to the definition in the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Registry.

National Needs Identification and description of CRSs: Pan-European level. National level. Regional and local levels. Description of the official transformation parameters between them and support them. Links to the organizations responsible for the establishment and maintenance of such transformations (usually National Mapping Agencies of the European Countries).

Current situation EPSG https://www.epsg-registry.org/ Not official. Coordinate Reference Systems of Europe (CRS-EU) http://www.crs-geo.eu Not a formal registry Continuation not assured. New ISO/TC 211 Registry for Geodetic Codes and Parameters initiative - Currently under development.

Discussion in Thematic Cluster #3 Is it a European Registry for Geodetic Codes and Parameters needed? Use the ISO/TC 211 Registry for Geodetic Codes and Parameters? – Options: Directly Connected to the INSPIRE Registry (Re3gistry) Discussion topic: https://themes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/discussion/view/5 623/support-to-crss-transformations-in-europe- need-for-an-official-crs-registry-in-europe
