28 BAPTISM Baptism : n. symbolic admission to the Christian Church with water; derived from Greek baptize. Bapto means to dip… seen in …. Luke 16:24, Rev. 19:13 , John 13:26 Baptism is…. total - involving the whole person and the whole personality of the one being baptized. transitional - a passing out of one stage or realm of experience. Compares to.. Opening and closing a door. The person being baptized, passes through a door opening up to him by the act of baptism; out of something old and familiar into something new and unfamiliar. Therefore the door is closed behind him and there is no turning back. JSM1/23 JSM1/23

(26) 4 TYPES OF BAPTISM Baptism of repentance Mark 1.4 Baptism of suffering Lk 12.50, Mark 10.38 Baptism of discipleship Matt 28.19 Baptism of the Holy Spirit Acts1.5 Baptism of discipleship – Christian baptism is to be carried in the full name and authority of the triune God. Baptism in the Holy Spirit - it is a supernatural endowment with power from on high to be witnesses for Christ. JSM3/23

(25) I. BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE Mark 1.4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission on sins. JSM4/23

(24) II. BAPTISM OF SUFFERING Lk 12.50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, how distressed I am till it is accomplished! Mark 10.38 You do not know what you ask, can you drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with JSM5/23

(23) III. BAPTISM OF DISCIPLESHIP Matt 28.19 Go ye therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost Christian baptism is to be carried in the full name and authority of the triune God. JSM6/23

(22) VI. BAPTISM OF HOLY SPIRIT Acts1.5 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you and you shall be witnesses unto me. Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a supernatural enduement with power from on high to be witnesses for Christ. JSM7/23

John’s Baptism (21) Repentance Public confession of sins Matt 3.7,8 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism; He said to them,”brood of vipers! Who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance” John’s baptism was essentially transitional! In other words…… Prove first by your actions that there has been a real change in your lives, before you ask me to baptize you. John’s baptism did not achieve the condition of abiding inward peace and victory over sin. This was made possible only through the full gospel message of Jesus Christ. Thos who enjoyed John’s conditions enjoyed a real experience of repentance and forgiveness, which was expressed in lives changed for the better. However these experiences were similar in character to the ministry of John i.e.. They were essentially transitional… JSM8/23

(19) Christian Baptism Why Christ took baptism? I Pet 2.21-22 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps who committed no sin, nor was guile found in His mouth. JSM10/23

‘thus which is in this manner’… He went inside the waters and came out (18) Matt 3.15 … ‘thus which is in this manner’… He went inside the waters and came out ‘it is fitting for us’…He expected that we should follow Him ‘to fulfill all righteousness’…the inward righteousness which Jesus had that was followed by an outward expression of obedience and dedication to God. The nature of Christian baptism is an outward act of obedience . Thereby the believer fulfills the inward righteousness which he already enjoys in his heart. All this, because of his faith in Christ's atoning death and resurrection. JSM11/23

(16) CRITIREA FOR BAPTISM I.REPENTANCE Acts2.37,38 II.BELIEVING Mark 16.15,16; Acts8.36-38 III. A GOOD CONSCIENCE I Pet. 3.21 IV. DISCIPLESHIP Acts 2.42; Acts 2.46 1. Repentance : Acts2.37,38 Firstly hear the gospel in order to understand the nature of his act. And then repent of his sins. Baptism is the outward sequel or affirmation, of the inward change that was already produced by repentance. 2. Believing : Mark 16.15,16; Acts8.36-38 He must confess his faith that Jesus Christ is the Son of God 3. A good conscience : I Pet. 3.21 He must be able to answer God with a good conscience, on the grounds that he has fulfilled all God’s requirements for salvation 4. Discipleship : Acts 2.42; Acts 2.46 He must commit himself to a life of discipleship. This is the new testament pattern for establishing new converts in the faith, after they had been baptised. JSM13/23

(15) I.REPENTANCE Acts2.37,38 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles ‘Men and brethren what shall we do?’ Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of the Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” JSM14/23

(14) Firstly hear the gospel in order to understand the nature of his act. And then repent of his sins. Baptism is the outward sequel or affirmation, of the inward change that was already produced by repentance. JSM15/23

(13) II.BELIEVING Mark 16.15,16 And He said to them “ Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but who does not believe will be condemned. He must repent of his sins JSM16/23

(12) This is also exemplified in Acts8 (12) This is also exemplified in Acts8.36-38 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said here is water the hinders me from being baptized? Then Philip said, if you believe with all your heart, you may; and he answered and said I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God. JSM17/23

(11) III. A GOOD CONSCIENCE I Pet. 3.21 There is also an antitype which now saves us, namely baptism, not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He must be able to answer God with a good conscience, on the grounds that he has fulfilled all God’s requirements for salvation JSM18/23

(10) IV. DISCIPLESHIP Acts 2.42 Those (that is those who have been baptized) continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers. Acts 2.46 And they, continuing daily in one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. JSM19/23

(9) He must commit himself to a life of discipleship (9) He must commit himself to a life of discipleship. This is the new testament pattern for establishing new converts in the faith, after they had been baptized. JSM20/23

(8) WHEN TO BE BAPTISED? Acts 16.33 The philipian jailer and his household were baptised the very same night they heard the gospel Acts 16.14,15 When the Lord opened the heart of Lydia to the gospel message, she and her was then babtised with all her household. Acts 10.48 Peter commanded Cornelius and his household to be baptised on the same day he first preached the gospel to theem; and the Holy Spirit fell upon all of them JSM22/23

(7) Acts 22.16 Within three days Paul was baptised Acts 8.36-39 Philip baptized the ethiopian eunuch the very day that he gave him the gospel. Acts 2.41 Thos who gladly received his (Peter’s) words were baptised and in one day 3000 were added to the church. Even though the preliminary instructions are necessary before baptism, no need to go into detail. Matt 28.19,20 says Go…and make disciples. JSM22/23

Matt 28.19,20 says Go…and make disciples. (6) Even though the preliminary instructions are necessary before baptism, no need to go into detail. Matt 28.19,20 says Go…and make disciples. JSM23/23
